Mikołajki is an excellent place for exploring the Masurian region by bike. Around the town you’ll find routes running along lakes, through the forests of the Puszcza Piska (Pisz Forest), nature reserves, and quiet Masurian towns.

We’ve prepared 12 cycling route suggestions starting and ending in Mikołajki. The shortest is 11.1 km and the longest is 89.6 km, so it’s easy to choose a route suitable both for a leisurely ride and an all-day trip.

Short cycling routes in Mikołajki

If you’re planning a recreational outing lasting a few hours, shorter loops leading to Lake Łuknajno, Stare Sady, Iznota, and the Puszcza Piska (Pisz Forest) are a great choice.

The small loop by Lake Łuknajno – 11.1 km

This is the shortest route in the set. It goes along the Mikołajki promenade and Kajki Street to the Kusnort peninsula, and then to the settlement of Łuknajno. Along the route, you can stop at the viewing towers and admire the lake known from the mute swan colony.

By the Mute Swan Trail – 19 km

A scenic loop around the Łuknajno Lake Nature Reserve. During the trip, it’s worth stopping at key points and viewing towers where you can observe the lake and the surroundings of Śniardwy.

The small loop south of Mikołajki – 20.1 km

The route leads through the forests of the Puszcza Piska (Pisz Forest) toward the ferry crossing on Lake Bełdany, and then on to Iznota.

The loop north of Mikołajki – 21.5 km

The route goes through villages located north of Mikołajki. The most picturesque stretch is through Stare Sady, from where you can enjoy views of the Tałty Lake area.

Longer cycling routes around Mikołajki

For people who want to spend a few hours on a bike and see a larger part of the Masurian region, we’ve prepared four longer loops ranging from 33.2 to 47.2 km.

Mikołajki – Baranowo – Użranki – Mikołajki loop – 33.2 km

The route runs northwest of Mikołajki through peaceful villages of the Mikołajki commune and through Użranki, located in the Mrągowo commune.

Bełdany loop – 38.6 km

The route goes through the Puszcza Piska (Pisz Forest) and allows you to circle Lake Bełdany. There is a ferry crossing along the way, so before you set off, it’s worth checking its operating period.

Bełdany MTB loop – 42.1 km

An alternative route option around Lake Bełdany. Due to the seasonal nature of the ferry crossing, the full loop can be completed only during the ferry’s operating period.

Loop around Lakes Tałty and Ryńskie – 47.2 km

The route goes north of Mikołajki and lets you circle the connected Lakes Tałty and Ryńskie. Most of the route runs through towns of the Mikołajki and Ryn communes.

All-day cycling routes across the Masurian region

The longest routes are a good proposal for people planning an all-day cycling trip across the Masurian region. They let you circle, among others, Śniardwy, Bełdany, and Lake Nidzkie.

Śniardwy loop – 80.2 km

A scenic route that lets you circle Lake Śniardwy. Due to the use of the ferry crossing, the full loop can be completed during the ferry’s operating period.

Bełdany and Nidzkie loop – 86.9 km

A long route through the Puszcza Piska (Pisz Forest) and around Lakes Bełdany and Nidzkie. The route is seasonal due to the ferry crossing.

Bełdany–Śniardwy loop – 87.9 km

A longer option around Śniardwy, which also includes the western shore of Lake Bełdany. This proposal, unlike some routes that use the ferry crossing, is available year-round.

Śniardwy loop with Łuknajno – 89.6 km

The longest route in the set. It goes around Lake Śniardwy and near the Łuknajno Lake Nature Reserve. The route includes a ferry crossing, so completing it fully is possible during the ferry’s operating period.

Which cycling route in Mikołajki should you choose?

For a short and relaxed outing, the Small loop by Lake Łuknajno (11.1 km) is a good choice. If you want to spend a few hours on a bike, you can choose one of the routes around Bełdany, Tałty, or Lake Ryńskie.

More experienced cyclists can plan an all-day trip around Śniardwy or combine rides along several Masurian lakes. Before setting off on routes using the ferry crossing, it’s worth checking current conditions and ferry operating hours.
